IE 3.0 Frequently Asked Questions
Q1) When I installed Image Edition, I chose TWAIN
scanner support and now I want to use ISIS drivers to scan, what do I do?
A1) Go to the Acquire window, click on the OPTIONS icon and choose ISIS
as the scanner type.
Q2) I chose to use TWAIN for scanning, but when I
click on the scan button in Image Edition, I get an error that says the file
TWAIN_32.DLL is missing; what can I do?
A2) Your scanner should have come with a TWAIN installation diskette,
run the install program provided. If you have an older scanner, it might have
a 16-bit driver. If this is the case, download TWAIN32.EXE from our website to
allow you to scan with 16-bit drivers.
Q3) I am running in 640x480 mode and the thumbnails
along the edge of document windows take up too much space, how do I get rid of
them?
A3) Under the OPTIONS menu, select PREFERENCES and in the VIEWER
section, choose NORMAL view as opposed to THUMBNAIL.
Q4) I was clicking around a document window with the
mouse and a hand appeared; what is it?
A4) When viewing documents at a zoom level such that the entire
document cannot fit in the window in both the vertical and horizontal
directions, the panning hand can be used to move around the document. To
activate the panning hand, double-click the left mouse button in the viewing
area and release it. Now simply slide the mouse around to move the view. When
the mouse hits and edge of the window, continue moving in that direction and
the view will continue to pan. To exit from the panning mode, click the left
mouse button again. Other functions of the mouse button: clicking the right
mouse button will zoom in to a selected area (if there is one) or toggle
between 100% zoom and the default view (see PREFERENCES dialog).
Q5) I want to fax a document from Image Edition, how
do I do it?
A5) If, as most Windows fax programs do, a print driver is installed by
the fax software you are using, simply print from Image Edition and select the
fax driver as the destination printer. If you want to create fax files for
transmission at a later time, under the FILE menu, EXPORT->PAGE allows
documents to be exported into various file formats including fax files.
Q6) I have been using a Windows fax program and have
tons of fax pages, how can I create documents in Image Edition from these
faxes?
A6) From the Acquire New Documents Window, select IMPORT. Navigate with
the Windows file selector to the directory where the fax files are stored and
select one or more files to import (more than one file may be selected at
once). Image Edition directly supports most proprietary fax files, so
conversion is not necessary. The fax pages will appear in the Acquire window
and can be grouped together and STORED into documents.
Q7) What is the difference between Personal Image
Edition and Professional Image Edition?
A7) Personal Image Edition is a fully functional version of the program
with the only restriction being that documents and indexes must reside on
drives which are directly connected to the workstation (no LAN drives). Which
means that only one user can access the documents. Professional Image Edition
allows documents to be shared between users in a LAN environment, it also has
plug-in features that will not be offered on the Personal product and supports
jukebox drives.
Q8) When I print to SuperDriver, Windows displays an
error saying that UNIDRV.DLL is not found; what is wrong?
A8) Image Edition does not install UNIDRV.DLL automatically because
this is different on each version of Windows. This message appears because no
other print drivers have been installed on your system; install any print
driver from the Windows installation disks (CD's) and UNIDRV.DLL will also get
installed.
Q9) What is the miniviewer and how do I use it?
A9) After installing Image Edition, the Getting Started icon is an
example of what is a miniviewer; it is a self-contained document/viewer
executable that can be freely distributed. The miniviewer adds only 47K of
overhead to the size of a document. To create a miniviewer, open a document
for viewing and under the FILE menu, select EXPORT->MINIVIEWER EXE. Supply
a name, and now you have a document that can be distributed to people without
an imaging application because the viewer is built in.
Q10) I want to move some documents from one machine
to another, how do I do it?
A10) Use COPY FOLDER (Administration menu ->MAINTENANCE) to copy
them to another drive (diskette) and on the machine receiving the documents,
use the INTEGRATE function (Administration menu ->MAINTENANCE).
Q11) What happens if I forget one of my passwords?
A11) The userIDs/passwords to gain access to the program can be changed
by running User Manager. For file cabinet passwords, a superuser can see and
change these by EDITing a file cabinet, drawer or folder.
Q12) I created some documents with Personal Image
Edition and now I want to install Professional Image Edition, can my documents
be migrated?
A12) The upgrade to the Professional version requires no migration at
all; documents created with the personal version will all appear the same with
the professional version.
Q13) What is Photo CD?
A13) Kodak(tm) created a system of storing high quality images on
inexpensive CD's, readable on the computer. Image Edition can view these
images and store them along with other documents. Since each image is stored
at multiple resolutions, it is necessary to choose which one is to be used
when viewing these images; the Photo CD options dialog will appear when any
PCD image file is loaded.
Q14) What is batch convert and when would I want to
use it?
Q14) Batch Convert (Administration menu) can be used to convert an
entire directory of images from one format to another. A possible use would be
the following: Suppose you had a directory full of images stored as PCX files;
TIFF G4 is a much more efficient storage method and typically takes about 1/3
the space of PCX. The files could be converted to TIFF G4 in one pass, without
having to load and save each one manually.
Q15) I want to create documents, but the terms
author, keywords and document name don't really apply to my documents, what
can I do?
A15) Select the file cabinet which you wish to customize and click on
the Edit Filecabinet button (second from left). Press the CUSTOMIZE FIELD
NAMES button and assign new names to these fields. The new names will then
appear in all parts of Image Edition when referring to the documents. You can
also customize the displayed columns on a per file cabinet basis.
Q16) Why are there three printing options: Fit to
page, actual size, 100%?
A16) Fit to page will stretch or shrink an image to best make use of
all the space on a page. Actual size means that a document which originally
was 5x4 inches when scanned, will be 5x4 inches when printed. 100% means that
for every document pixel, there will be a corresponding pixel on the printed
page; this option is useful for when stretching the image to fit would have
undesireable side effects.
Q17) Does Image Edition support Windows NT?
A17) Image Edition can be run on Windows NT, but there is one
limitation. The SuperDriver print driver does not work under NT because it is
a 16-bit driver; it works under Windows 3.x and Win95. In the near future we
will provide a Windows NT version of SuperDriver.
Q18) How big will documents be when stored in Image
Edition?
A18) Image Edition stores bilevel images as TIFF G4. A 300dpi 8.5x11
inch page typically requires 50-60K of disk space. Grayscale and color images
can require much more space depending on the complexity and bit-depth of the
page. Text files are stored compressed and typically require about 1K per
80x66 page.
Q19) I installed the LAN version of Image Edition and
was surprised at the various stored file sizes. I use a lot of half tone
images and some text.
A19) As we stated in the previous answer, Grayscale and color images
require more space. We highly recommend that you test samples of the various
document types prior to installation, so that scanner and storage requirements
can be more accurately determined.
Q20) How do I rename a Folder?
A20) To rename a folder, select that folder by clicking on it and then
click on the EDIT FOLDER icon (the small green folder toolbar icon). Enter a
new name and update the password information if desired.
Q21) Can I use other OCR packages with Image Edition?
A21) Not at this time. We reviewed several OCR packages before choosing
TextBridge Pro96 and found it a good price-performer.
Q22) Why don't I see any ISIS scanner drivers listed when I press the SELECT
SCANNER button?
A22) Check that there is a PIXTRAN directory in your WINDOWS directory
and that there are .PXW (.PXN on Windows NT) files for your scanner. Also
confirm that there are not older copies of the pixtran DLLS on your machine;
look for files with the name PIX*.DLL.
